Recode’s Kara Swisher, host of the popular podcast The Tech Report, talks with Kara Swager, host, The Tech Talk, about how she got her start in the tech world, and why she wants to help people with their mental health.
(10:05) Kara Swinger: I had a great year.
I got my first job.
I was like, “I can’t believe I’m doing this.”
It was awesome.
I’ve been doing it for three years now, and I’ve done more interviews than I can count, so I know that there’s a lot of people out there who need help.
I want to help them.
And so, I’m really excited to share my story and what I’ve learned along the way, with the show and with my listeners.
That said, it’s been really tough.
So, this is why we have to take the interview back.
So the last thing we have is a bunch of crazy questions, which I can’t answer in one conversation, but we have a lot more to talk about, so it’s going to be really interesting.
Let’s talk about it.
What’s your background?
How did you get started in the video game industry?
My background has been in the industry, which is not as big as the film and television industry.
So it’s not like I started at the same time as a game designer, and that was the biggest thing that motivated me to be a game developer.
It was like: “OK, I’ve got this.
This is what I can do.”
It just kind of happened.
I have a background in the computer science and math that was kind of a cross between the game and the film.
I actually majored in computer science, so when I went to school, I went through the computer programming course, and in that program, I actually did some programming.
So I actually got my degree from an educational technology university.
And I’m a big believer in the importance of having an education that’s relevant to the world in general.
So at the end of the day, I majored or got a bachelor’s degree in computer sciences and math.
So that kind of was my background and what made me want to become a game dev, and it was a very satisfying, fulfilling experience for me.
I had the chance to work on games like Final Fantasy, and Final Fantasy VI.
But what made it so satisfying was, there was no game I had ever done that was so good.
So what I got out of it was this sense of, “OK.
I can go work on a game.
This will be fun.
I’ll just try to do something that’s more like the movie than the game, because the movie was a really cool experience.
And the movie made me realize that I can be a really great game developer and a great programmer and a really good game designer.
And that’s exactly what I did.
What I got into was this idea of this idea that I’m going to do a really fun thing and not worry about the fact that I have to spend four years on something that might not make a lot money, but it’s a really unique, unique, amazing experience that people will love.
So now that I’ve gotten into that, I just kind, I got to focus on what I want my life to be.
And this was a big step for me, because I really wanted to get my own office.
I wanted to go to the movies, and now I get to go do a little bit of everything.
So my life is a lot different now.
I’m just starting to see what the business is like, so what’s it going to look like?
And that was a huge step for both of us.
We had this amazing moment.
It came at a really perfect time.
We were working on something like, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, and then I got the opportunity to come up with this really, really, awesome game, and a lot about my life, and what it’s like to be working on a video game.
And my life was kind to have that opportunity.
What kind of challenges did that bring to the table?
The first thing that was really tough was figuring out what it was going to take to get me to a point where I could actually make that game.
I would have to have some sort of, like, huge budget.
And then, if I couldn’t make the game for a long time, I was kind, it was kind like, I really can’t afford to make it.
So if I can make a game that has the kind of story that I want, and is fun, and not super expensive, I can afford to do it.
And it was an incredibly hard decision.
I felt like I had to really prove to myself that I was able to
